Useful information about the upcoming City budget process
What will happen on April 15: The Mayor will release his Proposed Budget. This is followed by nearly two months of discussion, analysis, and amendments until the City Council approves the final budget in mid-June. A lot can change during this time.
What will NOT happen on April 15: Any final decisions. Please do not take what is presented on April 15 as set in stone.
What’s next: There are many hearings, discussions, and places where amendments can be made. MEA is actively engaged and advocating for you. We have already changed much of the context of this budget, and we won’t stop here.
On June 10th, the Council will vote on the final budget. While this is the end of the process for them, this vote then begins a different City process, the Reduction in Force (RIF) process. If your position is impacted in the June 10th budget, the RIF process can provide options and change outcomes. So, even after June 10th, if you are impacted, there can be more.
As the budget process unfolds, MEA will be advocating for you at each step. If you have questions, concerns, or want an update, please reach out to your MEA Labor Relations Officer, or the MEA Main Office at info@sdmea.org or by calling (619) 264-6632.
